Independent and happy
Britons are learning to stand on their own two feet. They are more willing
than ever to take care of their own health and wealth. Old attitudes that
"the State will provide" are a thing of the past. A report by market
researchers Mintel noticed changes in consumer habits since 1974 and reveals
a new era of self-sufficiency. More people are working for themselves, most
of us want to live in a house we own rather than rent and there has been a
growth in personal pensions and private health insurance. Less cooking is
done in the home; the report says kitchens now resemble cafeterias, with
families eating at different times. The average age for starting work is 17.
Young people tend to leave home four years later. They are marrying for the
first time at 24, on average. The first child arrives the following year. But
only 33 per cent of couples under 25 setting up home together are married.
Twenty years ago it was 90 per cent. "These days people are more willing to
take responsibility for their health and economic
well-being", said Mintel's Angela Hughes.
