Save it or lose it

Costa Blanca Town Halls have launched a campaign pleading with residents to: "Save water or face cuts". Announcements are being read on radio stations in the Marina Baixa warning people not to use so much water or face serious consequences. Organised jointly by Calpe, Benissa and Teulada Councils, the warnings are in English, Spanish and French. They do not specify means of reducing water consumption, but the consequences would include the cuts that are presently hitting the Costa del Sol.

At the present Marbella and Estepona have only four hours of water supplies a day, while Fuengirola has to have drinking supplies brought in by lorry. Last week five coastal resorts, including Benalmádena and Estepona, were cut off completely for three days when the local reservoir dried up.

Warnings on the Costa Blanca come in the week that top government officials claimed that drastic measures on a national level must be taken. If not, over eight million people in southern Spain could be without water by autumn, despite restrictions. Public Works Minister José Borrell spelled out the situation by declaring that either water is piped to the worst hit areas by those with a surplus, or there won't be any water at all.

In spite of the intransigence of local farmers and officials, farmer's associations in Alicante province are demanding a rescue supply of water from the River Tajo in central Spain to save their crops.
